How to Keep Fresh Cut Flowers Looking Beautiful Longer

A little everyday care can help your cut flowers look their best. Whether you received a glass-vase arrangement or a wrapped bouquet, start with clean water and a suitable place to display the flowers.

Start with a clean vase

Before putting flowers into a vase, wash it thoroughly so old plant material and bacteria do not contaminate the fresh water. For a wrapped bouquet, gently remove the wrapping and arrange the stems in a sturdy vase that supports their shape.

Keep foliage out of the water

Leaves that sit below the waterline break down quickly and can cloud the water. Carefully remove only the foliage that would otherwise be submerged, without damaging the stems or blooms. In a professionally arranged vase, try not to disturb the overall design more than necessary.

Refresh the water regularly

Check water levels every day, especially for thirsty flowers and large arrangements. Refresh the water as needed and follow any flower-food instructions included with your flowers. When trimming stems, use clean, sharp shears and make a fresh cut to help the stems take up water. Some delicate varieties are best handled as little as possible once arranged.

Choose a cool display location

Keep your flowers away from direct afternoon sunlight, heating vents, hot appliances and ripening fruit. Extreme heat can cause blooms to fade or wilt sooner. A cool indoor spot with indirect light is usually a good place for cut flowers.

Remove spent blooms gently

Different flowers naturally last for different lengths of time. If a bloom starts to fade, remove it carefully so the remaining stems have space and the arrangement continues to look fresh. Flower longevity always varies by variety, handling, and room conditions—there is no single guaranteed number of days.

Our Signature Arrangement arrives in a glass vase with seasonal blooms and greenery. Our Ramo Buchón roses are wrapped and will need to be placed in water. If you are planning to pick up flowers from our Canal Winchester studio, see our pickup guide for transportation tips.

Why the first day matters

Freshly cut flowers depend on water after leaving the growing environment. A long spell in a warm car or a vase with very little water can affect how the bouquet looks later. Once you reach home, find a stable surface, check the water, and let the flowers settle in a relatively cool room.

Some flowers open gradually after pickup, while others may already be fully open. Do not force petals open or remove protective outer petals without a clear reason. If you are unsure how to handle a particular bloom, keeping it hydrated and avoiding repeated rearranging is a sensible starting point.

What if one flower fades before the others?

A mixed bouquet often contains flowers with different natural lifespans. Removing a spent flower gently is normal and does not necessarily mean the rest of the arrangement is failing. Change the water, remove submerged leaves and continue caring for the remaining stems.

Planning to gift flowers later in the day? Ask how the bouquet should be transported, especially if you are taking it from our Canal Winchester pickup location to another town. Our pickup guide offers tips on keeping arrangements upright during the drive.
